BEAN
HUNTER

A grading service for Hong Kong's coffee chains. More than five branches in the SAR, cafés only, no restaurants and no bars. We tell you which one is worth the walk.

8.9AGOOD BEAN

The most consistent cup in the city, and the rooms are lovely.

What's good

Roasts on-site in Quarry Bay, trains its baristas properly, and the extraction barely wobbles between branches. Wallpaper* called it one of the best-designed coffee shops in the world and the interiors earn it.

What's not

Queues at Gough Street and Landmark are punishing at 9am, the food is priced like a restaurant, and the newer mall units feel corporate next to the originals.

8.4AGOOD BEAN

Beautiful, photogenic, slightly smug — and still a very good latte.

What's good

Kyoto latte done to a standard nobody else here matches, Slayer machines everywhere, and the Henderson branch by Zaha Hadid Architects is a genuinely great room. Harbour-front locations are the best coffee views in Hong Kong.

What's not

Priced for tourists, a queue is basically guaranteed, and the menu is deliberately tiny. Order black and you may wonder where the money went.

8.2AGOOD BEAN

Opens at 6am, gets you out in four minutes, never messes up the order.

What's good

The best morning-commute chain on the island. Bakery is made in-house, the flat white is properly hot, and staff remember regulars. Airport branch is a mercy.

What's not

Island-only — Kowloon and the New Territories get nothing. Seating is scarce and the roast plays it safe.

8.1AGOOD BEAN

The competition nerds. Order a filter and pay attention.

What's good

Founder Kapo Chiu placed at the World Barista Championship and it shows — filter programme, single origins and brew technique are the most serious of any multi-site operator in town.

What's not

Just scrapes past the qualifying line, rooms are tight and noisy, and the brunch crowd swamps the coffee at weekends.

Blue Bottle Coffee 藍瓶咖啡

7.8BFINE

Californian precision at a Hong Kong markup. Hard to fault, easy to resent.

What's good

Ruthlessly consistent, light roasts handled with care, the New Orleans iced is the summer answer, and the cafés are calm in a way Central rarely is.

What's not

Expensive even by island standards, service is scripted, and the light roast leaves milk-drinkers cold.

7.4BFINE

Homegrown, award-heavy, and drifting towards being a restaurant.

What's good

Roasts in Hong Kong, runs actual barista education, and the house blends are dependable. Johnston Road remains a proper coffee bar.

What's not

The menu has crept into all-day dining, prices with it, and kiosk branches are noticeably weaker than the flagships.

7.1BFINE

Great ice-cream sandwiches. The coffee is the side dish now.

What's good

Rooms you actually want to sit in, strong all-day food, and the only chain here where the dessert is the reason to go.

What's not

Espresso quality swings hard between branches, the brunch queues are absurd, and it has been closing sites as often as opening them.

6.9BFINE

Hokkaido milk carries the whole operation, and it carries it well.

What's good

The Biei Jersey milk latte is a genuinely distinctive drink and nobody else does it properly. Quick, friendly, sensibly priced for what it is.

What's not

Take the milk away and the espresso is unremarkable. Barely over the qualifying line and mostly hidden in side streets.

6.2CMEH

A place to sit down in Central. Nobody's here for the espresso.

What's good

Reliable seating, long opening hours, gelato that saves the visit, and mall locations that make it a useful meeting point.

What's not

Roast tastes tired, service is slow at peak, and pricing sits above what the cup justifies.

6.1CMEH

The app gets you there, the price keeps you coming back. The coffee is a side benefit.

What's good

Cheapest chain coffee in the city, app-based ordering is genuinely fast, and the density is now impossible to ignore. Tourists and office workers use it for the same reason.

What's not

The mainland-standard menu is limited, branding is polarising in Hong Kong, and quality control wobbles as the store count grows.

Everywhere, air-conditioned, predictable. Coffee as infrastructure.

What's good

You are never more than a few minutes from one, the seating and wifi are the real product, and the Bing Sutt Corner heritage stores in Duddell Street and Mong Kok are worth a detour.

What's not

Dark roast burnt to a uniform grey, endless sugar-forward specials, and prices that no longer undercut the specialty crowd.

4.6DBAD BEAN

Hong Kong's own chain, slowly going cold. Sentiment only gets you so far.

What's good

Homegrown since 1992, genuinely cheap, opens early in the office towers, and the free-refill filter still exists in some branches.

What's not

Quality is a lottery, several branches average three stars on Google for a reason, and the fit-outs are visibly aging. Store count has been shrinking.

How the Bean Score works

  • · Google Maps average across branches, weighted by review volume — 40%
  • · OpenRice score, the local vote — 25%
  • · TripAdvisor rating, the visitor vote — 15%
  • · Awards, competition results and press — 10%
  • · Branch-to-branch consistency penalty or bonus — 10%

Scores are normalised to a ten-point scale, then translated into a grade: 8.0+ is a GOOD BEAN, 6.5–7.9 is FINE, 5.0–6.4 is MEH, under 5.0 is a BAD BEAN. Hand-checked in August 2026.
